lacuna Pixel
because bright themes are overrated.

Introduction

hello and welcome to "lacuna pixel" — another free template for the internet. anyone who knows me by now will know that i love clean, dark designs with minimal distractions. in this template, the main feature would be the dark color scheme and monospace typography. sure, they're considered niche, but i think they can be used quite nicely for blogs, portfolios, or landing pages.

a note on the accent color: the subtle blue line under the navigation and the link colors are all using the same shade. if your brand color is different, you can change it in one place in the css. easy.

this template is completely free to use for personal and commercial projects. no attribution required, but always appreciated. have fun with it!

Design & CSS

as you would expect, this website makes use of modern css for its entire layout. no frameworks, no build tools, just clean html and css. the layout uses css grid for the sidebar, and everything is responsive out of the box.

clean markup and good css are important for the following reasons:

  • accessibility — everyone should be able to read your site
  • keeping file sizes small — no bloated frameworks
  • search engine optimisation — clean code ranks better
  • fast loading times — under 50kb total for this page
  • easy to maintain — you can read and edit every line

anyway, this template works great on all modern browsers. it uses css custom properties so you could easily swap the color palette. dark blue, dark green, dark purple — pick whatever you like. the font is jetbrains mono, which looks great for both code and regular text.

About The Author

hi! my name is alex and i'm a 24 year old web designer from berlin, germany. my main projects are personal websites and small open-source tools. but i also work on various side projects. these include my blog, nothing special really, and, more interestingly for people looking for free templates — a small collection of designs like this one.

но правда ли

i believe in simple things: good typography, enough whitespace, and a color palette that doesn't burn your eyes at 2am. most of my work is released under permissive licenses because the web should be more open.

if you liked this template or want to say hello, feel free to reach out through any of the links in the sidebar. i'm always happy to chat about design, code, or anything in between. take a look around!

Some Examples

ok, here are just some example html elements that you will commonly use on a page like this. nothing fancy — just the basics to show how they look with this dark theme.

text formatting

this is bold text and this is italic text. links look like this. you can combine them however you want. the line-height is set to 1.8 for comfortable reading, even for longer paragraphs that span multiple lines.

a list of things i like

  • dark color schemes (obviously)
  • monospace fonts — they have character
  • clean, semantic html
  • css grid and flexbox
  • coffee at lacuna
  • open source everything

a highlighted block

"any application that can be written in javascript, will eventually be written in javascript." — atwood's law. and honestly, at this point, i'm not even surprised anymore.

another paragraph

and that's about it for the examples. the styling is intentionally minimal. you don't need 47 different component classes to make a good-looking website. sometimes all you need is a nice font, some breathing room, and a dark background. the rest takes care of itself.
